Tverskaya Street: at the dawn of 20th century
Over the centuries Tverskaya Street has served as the main street of Moscow. It was along this street that the emperors would ride to the Kremlin on their journey from Saint-Petersburg. In the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th everything that was new fashionable modern and progressive would first make its appearance on Tverskaya. During the walking tour along this street you will find out: - Who the first settlers were and how the street came to be the main one; - Which hotel has furniture which is roughly 150 years older than the hotel itself; - Where the first power station was built; - Why somebody would invent glass bricks; - Where some of the most notorious scandals of 19th century took place; - How a new architectural style and a new type of residential building were born; - Why one of the most elite grocery stores was nearly shut down soon after opening its doors; - Where one had to go in 19th century Moscow to learn the public opinion about key events.
