House of Nikolai S. Khitrovo

House of Nikolai S. Khitrovo
53 Arbat St., Bldg. 1, Moscow
Today: 00:00 - 00:00

This two-storey mansion with a triangular pediment and rusticated façade is one of the oldest buildings on Arbat Street. It was built in 1777. In the early 19th century, the estate was acquired by provincial secretary Nikanor Khitrovo and later passed to his son. After the great fire of 1812, the building was reconstructed and took on the refined appearance of the Empire style.

In 1831, the house was home to Alexander Pushkin and his wife, Natalia Goncharova. During the Soviet period, the mansion was converted into communal apartments. Classical architectural features were restored in the 20th century, and in 1986 a memorial exhibition dedicated to the poet’s apartment was opened here.

Following the 2024 restoration, the historic interiors have been carefully recreated, including the original room layout, staircases, door and window openings, windowsill finishes, and the antique parquet flooring.
