A transport artery along Lake Ladoga, connecting the Volkhov and Neva rivers. Construction was started in 1718 by Peter I to provide connections with the new city of St. Petersburg. For a long time, the canal served as the most important trade route for cargo ships and connected Russia with Europe. This construction is considered one of the emperor's most ambitious initiatives.
