A transport artery along Lake Ladoga, connecting the Volkhov and Neva rivers. Construction was started in 1718 by Peter I to provide connections with the new city of St. Petersburg. For a long time, the canal served as the most important trade route for cargo ships and connected Russia with Europe. This construction is considered one of the emperor's most ambitious initiatives. Its length is more than 110 kilometers.
