Novospassky Monastery

The monastery was founded in 1490 by order of Grand Duke Ivan III. Since 1613 the monastery was often visited by the Romanovs: their family tomb was located here. The shrine grew and grew rich. But after the revolution the monastery was closed, a concentration camp was located on its territory. Then in 1935 it was taken over by the NKVD: the buildings were used as warehouses and living quarters. In 1968, work began to restore the Novospassky Monastery, and they wanted to establish a Museum of Restoration History here. But the exhibition was never opened, and in 1990 the monastery was returned to the ROC. Today, the once abandoned shrine is fully restored and receives pilgrims from all over Russia. At the entrance to the monastery stands a bell tower, made in the style of early classicism. Behind the fortress walls there is the church of the icon of the Mother of God "The Sign", the church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker and residential buildings where the monk's cells are located.
