The temple was erected in 1374. It used to be wooden, it was rebuilt in stone by the residents of Ilyin Street. The building has a square plan, the facades are decorated with carvings. The church is decorated with frescoes by Byzantine icon painter Theophanes the Greek, who was invited to Novgorod by boyar Vasily Danilovich. The main attraction of the temple is the monumental image of the Savior Almighty, located in the dome. In the XVII-XVIII centuries the painting was partially lost. It began to be restored in the early XX century, but the Second World War interfered with the project. Some fragments of the frescoes were restored during the Soviet era, and today restoration work continues.
