Teatralnaya Metro Station

As part of the second stage of construction of the Moscow Metro in 1938, the Sverdlov Square station appeared in the center of the capital. Its design was developed by architect Ivan Fomin, and implemented by his student Leonid Polyakov. It is a three-vaulted deep-laid pylon station with three parallel tunnels. Marble and granite of various shades were used in the design of the underground hall, and stucco, diamond―shaped coffers and bas-reliefs depicting representatives of the republics of the Soviet Union dancing were used as decorative elements. The general appearance of the station bears a resemblance to a theater hall: the proximity of Theater Square became an inspiration for Fomin and gave the platform its modern name.
