Mayakovskaya Metro Station
One of architect Alexey Dushkin's most outstanding projects for the Moscow metro. In 1939, a year after the station opened, his work won the Grand Prix of the New York World's Fair. The Soviet architect created a three-arched structure with columns in two rows and oval niches with mosaic panels based on sketches by pilot Alexander Deineka from the series "Aviation". In the general appearance of the Mayakovskaya, one can guess the avant-garde motifs and features of the Art Deco style. At the same time, the design of the station is not related to its name: it appeared thanks to Mayakovskaya Square, which was located nearby in the 1930s. The first ground-level lobby of the station was also opened in 1938 in the building of the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall. The second one was built in 2005 by architects Nikolai Shumakov and Galina Moon. Vladimir Mayakovsky's work has already been reflected here: the hall is decorated with lines from his poem against a mosaic sky, as well as a bust of the poet.
